Tabled is a wall hanging creating from vintage tablecloths and napkins. The title is a play on the word “tabled”. Previously cherished table linens have now been ‘tabled’, that is, postponed or set aside for an indefinite time. It is rather poignant that items so treasured and essential to a woman’s life have become, in our disposable age, irrelevant. The stitched text of helpful guidelines for the use and care of household linens, taken from a 1923 publication entitled Woman’s Institute Library of Dressmaking, was painstakingly hand stitched. The stains on organza are like ghosts, faint reminders of those that made the stains and used the cloths.
